Detailing Wash vs Regular Car Wash: What's the Difference
A regular car wash removes dirt in 15 minutes. A detailing wash takes much longer and costs more. Here's what you're paying for and when you don't need to overpay.

At a regular car wash, the car is washed quickly: foam, a brush or sponge, a rinse, and drying with a cloth. Fifteen minutes later you drive away. A detailing wash works differently, and the main difference is not how clean the car is, but what’s left on the paint afterwards.
What happens at a regular car wash
The goal of a conveyor wash is to get as many cars as possible through in a shift. So:
- one sponge or brush goes over every car in turn and picks up sand from each;
- the chemicals are aggressive, so the dirt loosens within a couple of minutes;
- wheels, sills and bodywork are cleaned with the same tool;
- they are dried with the same cloth.
Sand in a sponge works like sandpaper. Once, you won’t notice it. But if you wash this way every week, after a year the paint develops swirl marks and a net of tiny scratches that show in the sun. That’s the same “spider web” that is later removed with polishing.
What a detailing wash is
A detailing wash is meant to clean the car without scratching anything. It’s done in several stages:
- Touchless foam. Softens and removes the main dirt while nothing touches the body.
- Hand wash. A soft mitt and two buckets, so the sand doesn’t go back onto the paint.
- Wheels separately. Brake dust bites into the wheel finish, so it needs its own cleaner and brushes.
- Microfiber drying and blowing. Water is blown out of gaps, mirrors and behind seals, otherwise it will leave streaks later.
The chemicals are gentle, with a neutral pH. They don’t strip wax or ceramic coating if the car has one.
Side-by-side comparison
| Regular car wash | Detailing wash | |
|---|---|---|
| Time | 15–20 minutes | several times longer |
| Contact with paint | shared brush or sponge | clean mitt, after foam |
| Wheels | same tool | separately, with their own products |
| Chemicals | aggressive | neutral pH |
| Scratch risk | high with regular washing | minimal |
| Price in Tbilisi | cheaper | from 80 ₾ |
How much a detailing wash costs at Detailing Standart
- mini: 80 ₾;
- sedan: 100 ₾;
- SUV: 120 ₾;
- wet interior cleaning: +30 ₾.
You can calculate the exact cost in the calculator on the prices page. It also shows what the total will be together with interior cleaning or polishing. If the cabin needs more than wet cleaning, there is interior cleaning.
When a regular wash is enough
You don’t always need to overpay. A touchless wash without brushes is enough if:
- you just need to rinse off dust after a couple of days in the city;
- the car is old and its paint has been in poor condition for a long time;
- you’re planning polishing soon: it will start with a wash anyway.
But avoid brush tunnel washes altogether, especially after polishing or ceramic coating.
When a detailing wash is really needed
- Dark-coloured car. On black and dark blue, any scratch shows right away.
- Polished body or ceramic coating. A wrong wash brings back the “spider web” within a couple of months, and you paid to have it removed.
- Before selling. A clean car without streaks looks more expensive, and it’s easier to negotiate.
- Once a season. Even if you usually wash the car yourself, every few months it’s worth cleaning what’s hard to reach at home: gaps, door openings, the inside of the wheels.
If the paint already has hologram marks and haze, a wash won’t remove them. That calls for restoration polishing. To understand when it’s really needed, read the article when to polish the body.
