Car Care After Detailing: When and How to Wash

After polishing or ceramic coating, the car shines like new. How long it stays that way depends mainly on how you wash it afterwards. Here are the rules we explain to clients at handover.

Porsche Cayenne interior after interior cleaning

Polishing removes defects from the paint, ceramic coating protects the result, and interior cleaning brings back the smell of a new car. But all of this is easy to undo within a couple of months if you go through brush washes and wipe the body with a cloth from the trunk.

The first days after ceramic coating

Ceramic coating hardens over several days after application. During this time:

  • don’t wash the car with chemicals, especially alkaline ones;
  • if it gets dirty, rinse it off with water without touching it;
  • remove bird droppings and tree resin right away: with a soft damp cloth, without pressing;
  • where possible, don’t leave the car under trees.

Once the coating has hardened, water beads and rolls off the body, and dirt sticks less. We explain in detail how ceramic coating works and how long it really lasts in the article car ceramic coating.

How to wash a car after polishing and ceramic coating

The main rule: nothing should rub over a dry body. Dust and sand under a cloth or brush act as an abrasive.

The right way:

  1. First rinse off the dirt with water or touchless foam.
  2. Wash with a soft mitt and two buckets: one with shampoo, the other to rinse the mitt in.
  3. Use shampoo with a neutral pH. It doesn’t strip the protective layer.
  4. Dry with clean microfiber, patting rather than rubbing.

If you don’t wash the car yourself, choose a hand wash or a detailing wash. Don’t go through automatic brush washes at all.

What not to do

  • Brush tunnel washes. After a couple of these, the “spider web” on a dark car will come back.
  • Dish soap. It degreases and strips the protection.
  • Wiping a dusty car dry. Even with microfiber.
  • Polishing yourself with abrasive compounds from a shop. They remove a layer of paint, and the ceramic coating with it.

The interior after cleaning

The interior dries in 4 to 24 hours, depending on how deeply the seats and floor were washed. While it dries:

  • keep the windows slightly open if the car is in a garage or yard;
  • don’t put bags or clothes on the seats;
  • don’t put the floor mats back in until they’re dry.

After that, it’s simple. Once every couple of weeks, vacuum the floor and wipe the plastic with a slightly damp microfiber. Wipe up spilled coffee right away, before it soaks into the fabric. We’ve written separately about when you’ll need interior cleaning again.

What to do between visits to the studio

  • Keep a couple of clean microfiber cloths in the trunk. A bird dropping left in the sun for a day etches into the paint.
  • In winter and after trips to the mountains, rinse the wheel arches and sills. Road salt and reagents corrode the metal.
  • In summer in Tbilisi, park the car in the shade. Sun and heat age both the paint and the interior plastics faster.

When to come back

There’s no single schedule. These are the guidelines:

  • ceramic coating: lasts 1, 3 or 5 years, depending on the coating chosen and how the car is washed;
  • polishing without protection: the shine lasts until the paint is scratched again, most often by car wash brushes;
  • interior cleaning: when stains or a smell appear that don’t go away after airing out.

At handover, the technician will explain how to care for your specific coating. If you’re unsure, write to us on WhatsApp: we’ll advise what to wash with and how. FAQ

How many days after ceramic coating can I wash the car?

For the first few days, while the coating hardens, it's best not to wash the car with chemicals. The technician will give the exact timing for your coating at handover. If the car gets dirty, rinse it with water only, without shampoo and without touching it.

Can I take the car through an automatic wash after polishing?

No. Automatic wash brushes bring back the micro-scratches and holograms that polishing removed. Wash it by hand or at a touchless wash.

What should I wash a car with ceramic coating with?

Car shampoo with a neutral pH. Alkaline chemicals at touchless washes and dish soap break down the protective layer faster.

Can I wash a car with ceramic coating at a touchless wash?

Yes, but not every week. The strong alkaline chemicals at touchless washes break down the coating faster. A hand wash with a neutral pH shampoo is better.
