Wax or Ceramic Coating: Which to Choose for Car Paint

Both coatings add shine, and water rolls off both. That's where the similarity ends. We compare wax and ceramic coating by lifespan, protection and cost.

In short: wax is for keeping the car shiny for the next month. Ceramic coating is for protecting the paint for years. Here’s a detailed look at how they differ and when each option makes more sense.

What wax is

Wax is a soft layer on the surface of the paint. It can be natural (carnauba-based) or synthetic. It fills tiny pores, gives a warm, deep shine and repels water.

The downside is that wax is soft. It washes off with shampoo, melts in the sun and wears away when washed. Usually it lasts a few weeks.

What ceramic coating is

Ceramic coating is a liquid compound based on silicon dioxide, which hardens on the paint into a thin, solid layer. It doesn’t wash off with shampoo and lasts for years: we apply coatings for 1, 3 and 5 years. We wrote about what ceramic coating can and can’t do in a separate article.

Wax or ceramic coating: comparison by lifespan, protection and price

Wax Ceramic coating
Lifespan a few weeks 1, 3 or 5 years
Shine warm, “wet” glassy, deep
Protection from sun and chemicals weak noticeable
Water-repellent effect yes, until it washes off yes, for the whole term
Resistance to washing washes off stays
Application can be done yourself only in the studio, on prepared paint
Price cheaper per application from 600 ₾

When to choose wax

  • You like taking care of the car yourself and are ready to wax it every month.
  • You need to refresh the look quickly, for example before a photo shoot or a sale.
  • The paint is in poor condition and you don’t want to invest in a long-lasting coating yet.

When to choose ceramic coating

  • You’ve just had polishing and want to keep the result.
  • The car is new or the paint is in good condition.
  • You don’t have the time or desire to regularly work on the body.
  • The car spends a lot of time outside under Tbilisi’s sun.

Preparation matters more than the choice of coating

Both wax and ceramic coating only highlight what’s already on the paint. If the body has “spider web” wash marks and cloudy spots, after coating they will become even more visible because of the shine.

So first assess the paint. If you can see circles and a net of fine scratches in the sun, start with polishing. To understand when it’s really needed, read the article when to polish the body.

How much it costs

Ceramic coating costs from 600 ₾, and is 20% cheaper when combined with polishing. Details are on the ceramic body coating in Tbilisi page.

If you’re unsure what to choose for your car, come for an inspection. The technician will check the paint and honestly say whether ceramic coating is needed or polishing alone is enough in your case. You can calculate the cost in the calculator.

FAQ

Which lasts longer, wax or ceramic coating?

Ceramic coating. Wax lasts a few weeks, while ceramic coating lasts 1, 3 or 5 years depending on the product.

Can I apply wax over ceramic coating?

You can, but there's little point. Ceramic coating already gives gloss and a water-repellent effect, and wax on top washes off quickly.

Which is cheaper in the end?

Wax is cheaper per application. But it has to be renewed constantly, while ceramic coating is applied once and lasts for years.

Which is better for a new car, wax or ceramic coating?

Ceramic coating. On a new car the paint is still in good condition, and the coating will preserve it for years. Whether polishing is needed before application, the technician will tell you at the inspection.
